Xplan integrations: what advice firms can build, and what's gated
Xplan, Iress’ financial-advice software, is entrenched across a large share of Australian licensed advisers — particularly inside big AFSL networks. It runs the machinery advice firms can’t do without: client records, fact-finds, Statement of Advice production, ongoing-fee renewal, and compliance documentation. No firm we talk to wants to replace that. What they want is to build a better client and adviser experience around it — without tripping over the constraints that come with a platform this regulated and this networked.
Those constraints are the part worth understanding before you scope anything, because with Xplan, “can we build it?” often depends less on the idea than on your licensing and access.
Why access is the first question
Xplan sits inside a compliance-heavy, licensee-controlled world. API access and what you’re permitted to integrate can be gated at the AFSL or enterprise tier — the licensee network you sit under may determine what’s available to you, not just Iress. That’s not a flaw; it reflects how tightly financial advice is regulated. But it means the honest first step on any Xplan project is confirming exactly what access your particular situation allows, before a single feature is scoped. We’ve seen firms fall in love with an idea that their licensing simply doesn’t permit — better to find that out on day one.
Once access is confirmed, there’s real room to build.
What advice firms build around Xplan
Branded client portals. A portal where clients see their advice relationship — documents, reviews, progress — reading from Xplan but presented as your firm. For an advice business where trust is everything, a polished, branded client experience is a genuine differentiator over the generic.
AI-assisted document classification. Advice firms drown in documents. Bespoke tooling that helps classify and route incoming documents — while respecting where the data lives and who’s allowed to see it — takes a real administrative load off the team.
Automated annual review workflows. The ongoing-review cycle is both a compliance obligation and an admin burden. Automating the workflow around it — the reminders, the document assembly, the tracking — reduces manual effort and helps nothing slip, which matters when the obligation is regulatory.
Integration with accounting and SMSF platforms. Connecting Xplan to the accounting and self-managed-super systems a firm also runs, so client financial data stays consistent across the stack instead of being re-entered.
Staying in the right lane
A necessary note: financial advice is heavily regulated, and the compliance and licensing obligations around advice, client data, and record-keeping sit with the firm and its licensee — always. Our role is the technology that supports those obligations: Australian data residency, encryption, audit logging, and access controls appropriate to sensitive financial data, engineered from the schema up. We build to support your compliance framework; we don’t set it, and we won’t pretend to bring the regulatory expertise that’s rightly yours and your licensee’s.
When it’s worth building
Custom work around Xplan earns its keep for established firms where the client experience is a competitive edge, where review-cycle admin is a real cost, or where document volume is overwhelming the team — and where the licensing allows it. If you’re a smaller practice comfortably inside Xplan’s native features, you may not need it, and we’ll say so.
If you’re running Xplan and the experience around it hasn’t kept up with the quality of your advice, that’s where a custom layer starts to pay for itself — provided the access is there. The honest first conversation is about what your licensing permits, and we’re happy to have it before you commit to anything.
