RxWorks integrations: what to build on an established vet practice system
RxWorks has been part of the Australian veterinary landscape for a long time, and it’s still broadly adopted across mid-market clinics for good reason — clinical records, dispensing, scheduling and billing all handled by a system practices know inside out. The clinical core isn’t the problem. The problem clinics bring to us is the pet-owner experience around it, which established practice systems were never really built to deliver.
That’s the layer worth building — and how you build it depends a little on the age and architecture of the system underneath.
The clinical record stays; the owner experience gets built
Pet owners now expect the same digital convenience from their vet that they get everywhere else: book online, get reminders, understand the treatment plan, pay easily. A heritage clinical system does the veterinary work well but rarely delivers that owner-facing polish. So the pattern is familiar — keep RxWorks as the source of truth for clinical data, and build the experience on top.
A branded pet-owner portal. Where owners see their pets’ records, upcoming appointments, and account — reading live from RxWorks, presented as your clinic rather than a generic widget. For a practice building loyalty in a competitive area, that experience is part of the brand.
Online booking with species-specific logic. A booking that understands a cat vaccination, a dog dental and a livestock call-out aren’t the same appointment — different durations, different resources — and writes cleanly back into the RxWorks diary. Generic booking tools treat every slot the same; a proper integration respects how a vet clinic actually runs.
Treatment-plan presentation. Helping owners understand and accept recommended treatment is as real in veterinary practice as it is in dentistry. Pulling the plan out of RxWorks into a clear, owner-friendly presentation improves both understanding and acceptance.
Recall automation. RxWorks knows when a pet is due for a vaccination or check-up. Turning that into timely, automated recalls — instead of relying on someone to run a list — brings pets back in without adding front-desk work.
Where an established system differs from cloud-native
An honest point worth making: how much you can build, and how, depends on the integration surface the system exposes. Established, longer-heritage practice systems generally offer a more limited integration surface than newer cloud-native platforms. That doesn’t rule out a strong owner-facing layer — portals, booking and recalls are all achievable — but it does mean the engineering around secure, controlled data flow matters more, and the realistic scope should be confirmed before anyone briefs a big project.
If your clinic is weighing up a newer platform, it’s worth understanding what changes. A cloud-native system like ezyVet typically offers a more open, modern API, which raises the ceiling on two-way integration. That’s not a reason to switch on its own — there’s real cost and disruption in migrating a practice system — but if you’re already considering a move, the integration possibilities are part of the picture. When it’s worth it
The custom layer earns its keep when the owner experience is a competitive factor, when recalls and no-shows are leaking revenue that better automation would recover, or when the front desk is drowning in manual booking and reminders. A small, steady single-vet practice may be fine on the native features — and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s you.
